MIDSUMMER IN THE EASTFJORDS

You have the chance to venture on horseback into the fascinating mountains of Iceland’s eastern fjords. The route is very varied and attractive: on old postal route, over wide sandy areas many kilometers through black lava sand along the sea and over steep mountain passes to the small village Bakkagerði in Borgarfjörður eystri, whose region is known for its magical nature. Here we can expect rhyolite-colored mountain ranges, puffins and a hot pot next to the sea. In the next days we will continue through the imposing mountains to the secluded fjord Breiðavík with overnight stay in a cozy hiking hut close by the horses and the possibility to ride on the beach.

In the Loðmundarfjörður tours we continue from Breiðavík through the magical beauty of the Víknaslóðir area to the fjords Húsavik and Lodmundarfjördur.

Midsummer in the Eastfjords June 22.–29. 2025

June 22 Arrival in Egilsstaðir, horse riding in Borgarfjörður eystri – overnight stay on Geirastaðir
We meet at 3:35 p.m. at the domestic airport in the small town of Egilsstaðir and drive the approximately 70 km long, scenic route to the beautiful fishing village of Bakkagerdi in Borgarfjördur eystri, where our horses have been staying since the outbound tour.
We enjoy a coffee break at Hafnarhólmi area, home to a large puffin colony, where you can easily take great photos of these cute birds. After that we go on our first ride, depending on the weather and water level, with several river crossings or we choose a route below the mountains with impressive stone formations.
In the evening we drive to our farm Geirastaðir to spend the night

      June 23
Grund – Húsavík, overnight stay in the mountain hut Húsavík
Now we start with the whole herd on our tour. A very beautiful route over the steep
mountains through the fascinating mountain landscape of Víknasloðir to the next mountain hut in Húsavík. The horses graze nearby on the mountainside while we make ourselves comfortable in the hut or explore the surrounding area.

      June 24
Húsavík –Breiðavík, overnight stay in the mountain hut Breiðavík
We ride from the hut in Húsavík through a fascinating mountain landscape, past the striking liparite-rich rock Hvitserkur and the mountain lake Gæsavatn, down into the next fjord Breiðavík. The hut is very close to the sea and you can ride again in the evening to the beach with your favorite horse.

      June 25
Breiðavík -Borgarfjörður-eystri, overnight stay in the hotel Blábjörg, Borg.eystri
It goes over the mountain pass Gangnheiði towards Borgarfjörður eystri and back to the idyllic village of Bakkagerði, where apart from the bird rock Holmavik there is still much more to discover: an "elf hill" to be walked around, the old church of Bakkagerdi and the cozy Álfacafe. We treat ourselves to a "luxury night" in the Hotel Blábjörg with bed linen, the possibility for hot pot and spa directly by the sea (extra fee) and a delicious breakfast buffet.

June 26 Borgarfjörður-eystri –Gagnstöð, overnight stay on Geirastaðir
Today we start from Bakkagerdi on the country road along the sea to Njarðvík, where we take a leisurely break at the sheepfold. Then we ride or lead the horses over the steep, scenic mountain pass Gönguskarð with an amazing sea view over the last mountain of our tour.

      June 27
      Gagnstöð-Hóll, overnight stay on Geirastaðir
We ride over sand dunes and open uneven meadow areas through the beautiful Héraðsandur area. A part of the ride today will be at the beach, a good opportunity to make great fotos on the black lava sand. The ride today is not very long so it will be possible to drive to Egilsstaðir and enjoy the evening at the geothermal bath Vök ( www.vokbaths.is ).

      June 28
Hóll –Geirastaðir, overnight stay on Geirastaðir
The last part of the riding tour along the big river Lagarfljót to the old church Kirkjubær, from where an old postal tour leads directly to our farm Geirastaðir. There the horses are allowed finally on their native pastures and we ourselves celebrate the "made" tour with Roasted lamb.

      June 29
On the morning of June29th we will drive the participants to the domestic airport (departure 10:05 a.m.) in Egilsstaðir - and wish them a safe journey home or onward on Iceland.
Alternatively, there is the option of a day trip to one of the sights in the area (such as the basalt columns in the famous Stuðlagil Canyon, the impressive Hengifoss waterfall, which can be combined with a delicious buffet meal in the atmospheric Skriðuklaustur, or the beautiful harbor town of Seyðisfjörður.) for a fee. At least 4 participants. Departure then with a domestic flight at 4:05 p.m. or 7:45 p.m

Flight ticket to Egilstadir is included in the price
