Into the Far East

We ride on old postal routes through Breidavik, Húsavik and Lodmundarfjördur in the far east to the farm Geirastaðir.

You have the chance to venture on horseback into the fascinating mountains of Iceland’s eastern fjords. The route is very varied and attractive: on old postal route, over wide sandy areas and steep mountain passes to the small village Bakkagerdi in Borgarfjördur eystri, whose region is known for its magical nature. Here we can expect rhyolite-coloured mountain ranges, puffins and a hot pot next to the sea. There are additional evening rides possible to the sea through the black lava sand.

Into the Far East – On old postal roads in the East Fjords

17.07. Arrival in Egilsstaðir, drive to Loðmundarfjörður, overnight stay in mountain hut
Our meeting point is The domestic airport in Reykjavík at 7:00. After arrival in Egilstaðir we meet with our local guide Angelica, in the morning around 8:30 at the airport of the small town Egilsstaðir and drive the approximately 150 km scenic route to the beautiful fishing village Bakkagerdi in Borgarfjördur Eystri. After a short break we continue again 2 hours on serpentine roads to the enchanted, lonely Loðmundarfjörður, where our horses have been resting after the last tour. After a cup of coffee we will have a first ride to the sea to get to know the horses before we start with the whole herd the next day. We will spend the night in the cozy hiker's cabin in Lodmundarfjörður next to the small church Klyppstaðir with an enchanting view of the surrounding mountains.

18.07. Loðmundarfjörður - Húsavík, overnight stay in mountain hut Húsavík

We ride a beautiful route over the mountains to the next cabin in Húsavík. In the evening there is an option of going to the coast and to the small church of Húsavík. We stay at the mountain lodge Húsavík which is situated on a hill surrounded by majestic mountains.

19.07. Húsavík - Breiðavík, overnight stay in mountain hut Breiðavík

We ride from the cabin in Húsavík through a fascinating mountain landscape, past the striking liparite-rich rock Hvitserkur and the mountain lake Gæsavatn, down into the next fjord Breiðavík. The cottage here is very close to the sea and so in the evening we can take some horses for a beach ride.

20.07. Breiðavík - Borgarfjörður eystri, overnight stay at Hotel Blábjörg, Borgarfjörður eystri

We ride back over two mountain passes towards Borgarfjörður eystra and again to the idyllic village of Bakkagerði, where we visit the bird rock Holmavik with countless puffins. There are plenty other things to discover in the afternoon: an "elf hill" to hike around, the old church of Bakkagerdi, the very cozy Álfacafe and finally a hotpot directly at the sea to relax. We stay the night at the luxurious Hotel Blábjörg (with possible hotpot/spa).

21.07. Borgarfjörður eystri - Gagnstöð, overnight stay Geirastaðir

After the delicious breakfast buffet in Blábjörg we will go from Bakkagerdi on the road directly along the sea to Njarðvík, where we have a break. Afterwards we ride over the steep, scenic beautiful mountain pass Gönguskarð with Ocean view over the last mountain of our tour. On the other side we leave our horses at the farm Gagnstöð and drive back to our farm Geirastadir.

22.07. Gagnstöð - Hóll, overnight stay Geirastaðir

Today we ride over the wide Héraðsandur. We ride over sand dunes and open uneven meadows to the sea beach, along which we ride for many kilometers. Experience has shown that it is difficult to keep the horses together as a herd here, so we take most of the horses as hand horses. If the group wishes we can ride to Egilsstadir to the geothermal bath Vök and spend the evening in the huge hotpots.

23.07. Hóll - Geirastaðir, overnight stay Geirastaðir
The last stretch of the riding tour takes us along the big river Lagarfljót to the old church Kirkjubær, from where an old post road leads directly to our farm Geirastaðir. There the horses head to their home pastures and we ourselves celebrate the "finished" tour with roasted lamb. Before our dinner we can drive to our neighboring farm Húsey, to see the seals resting on land in the Jökulsá.

      24.07. Geirastaðir - Reykjavik

After breakfast, we say goodbye to our horses and hosts. Before heading to the domestic airport (the plane departs at 16.05 o'clock), we can chose a fantastic opportunity of enjoying extra time in the area by sightseeing some marvels and interesting sites of Iceland’s East (for instance the canyon Studlagil, the waterfall Hengifoss, the museum Obyggðasetur, Seyðisfjörður, or the hot pots of Laugarfell).

Domestic flight ticket from Reykjavik to Egilstaðir and back is included in the price.
