Horseback riding – Iceland

This summer we are celebrating our 35th anniversary of horseback riding with guests in Iceland! Wich means that we have been giving our guests the opportunity to go horseback riding in Iceland and to experience the Icelandic horse on Icelandic grounds for a long time now! It is safe to say that a lot has changed since we first started and a lot has stayed the same!

The Kjölur tour was the first tour that was operated by Íshestar. This horse riding tour through the heart of Iceland was and is still very popular amongst our guests. Quickly the owners saw that there was a big demand for other horseback riding tours in Iceland and started operating the Golden Circle tour to offer riders horseback riding tours in south Iceland.

From 1990 new routes were added to the program and new farmers were made partners after operating as affiliates for a while. Now we offer more than 20 multi-day riding holidays in Iceland from most corners of the country and many of our partners have been with the company for more than 20 years. The Stables in Hafnafjörður (Reykjavik area) was opened in the year 2000 and enables Íshestar to operate a variety of day tours, both for experienced and for less experienced riders, all year long.

To celebrate our 35th anniversary we organized a new special riding tour which takes place in the north of Iceland in the beautiful Arnarvatnsheiði heath. On this horseback riding Iceland tour our farmer Haukur in Hvammur will take you on a special adventure. When riding up to the heath you will take part in driving the herd of Icelandic horses, mares, foals and youngsters to the highlands where they will spend the summer roaming free until they get back to the countryside during the horse round up next fall.
